How a science fair board is organised
Most science fair displays use a tri-fold board about 36 inches tall and 48 inches wide when open. Visitors read it like a book, left to right. The left panel introduces the project: question, background research and hypothesis. The centre panel carries the title at the top and the most important content — often data, graphs and photos of the experiment. The right panel covers results, conclusion and what you would do next. The layout sheet shows exactly where each header and section fits.
| Panel | Sections |
|---|---|
| Left | Question · Research · Hypothesis · Variables |
| Centre | Title · Materials · Procedure · Photos · Data and graphs |
| Right | Results · Conclusion · Further questions · References |
The scientific method headers
- Question — what are you trying to find out?
- Research — what is already known?
- Hypothesis — your testable prediction, often “If … then … because …”.
- Variables — independent, dependent and controlled.
- Materials — everything you used.
- Procedure — numbered steps someone else could follow.
- Data — tables of measurements, with units.
- Results — graphs and what they show.
- Conclusion — was the hypothesis supported? What were the limitations?
Tips for a strong science poster
- Make the title big and interesting; a question works well.
- Use graphs to show results — bar graphs for categories, line graphs for change over time.
- Label axes with units and give every graph a title.
- Include clear photos of your setup and process (without faces if school rules require).
- Keep text short; use bullet points and large, readable fonts.
- Glue items flat and straight — measure before you stick.
- Practise explaining your project in one minute.
Who it is for
Students from upper elementary through high school, parents helping with a first science fair, and teachers who want consistent poster formats for a class. The templates follow the general structure used in most school fairs, but always check your school's or fair's specific rules for size, required sections and safety.
Formats
Headers and posters are print-ready PDFs on US Letter paper (headers print large and bold so they are readable on a board) and editable Word documents. The planner, data tables and judging checklist are in Word and Excel. Printing in colour looks best, but everything works in black and white.
A simple timeline for a science fair project
Most students need four to six weeks. In week one, choose a question and do background research; in week two, write the hypothesis, identify variables and gather materials; in weeks three and four, run the experiment with repeated trials and record data carefully; in week five, graph the results and write the conclusion; and in the final week, assemble the board and practise explaining the project. The planner in the pack breaks these steps into checkboxes with due dates, so projects do not all land on the last weekend.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a science fair board?
Most tri-fold boards are 36 × 48 inches open; check your fair's rules.
What goes in the middle of a science fair board?
The title, and usually procedure, photos and the main data and graphs.
Can I use these for a class poster instead of a fair?
Yes, the single-sheet classroom poster templates are designed for that.
Are the headers editable?
Yes, in the Word versions; the PDFs print ready to cut out.
Was AI used to create the pack?
The templates were drafted with AI assistance and then reviewed, edited and formatted before publishing.
